Hey, look! I have another talented friend who wrote a book . . . I have the coolest friends!
You may remember meeting Harriet Outlaw in my story about her wonderful house, Benulee. As if she weren’t fascinating enough with everything else she does, Harriet has now filled a book with her knowledge of enthralling stories about the ghosts of Haunted Baldwin County Alabama.
Harriet’s recent book signing was so much fun, and we all got a kick out of her telling us the spooky tales of several of the ghosts who may (or may not) roam our area.
Harriet is an expert storyteller and has plans to launch a storytelling festival in our area, so if any of you are interested in helping, let her know. The way she wove the details of each story kept everyone spellbound and the endings of the tales sent little shivers down our spines!
If you want to learn more about a haunting piano melody that fills the air at the Grand Hotel, or why you keep seeing Civil War soldiers appearing on your walks in Village Point Park Preserve in Daphne, you’ll definitely want to pick up a copy of this book that is full of old photographs showing the locations of many of these spooky events.

She has such a great story of independence that not many women her age (or any age) have.
Fairhope is definitely on my radar for our beach visit next September. You have shared so many neat things there. We were there in 2001 and loved it but have not been back so it is time. Right now I am reading a series of books by Ann Purser about an English village called Round Ringford! Why don’t we have cute villages like that here in the USA?
It’s a case of, “don’t tell me what to do with my property.” Fairhope’s founders nipped that in the bud by declaring most of the waterfront and many other pockets as public property that can never be developed. That’s helped give a village feel to the area, but even here, it’s hard to keep big box businesses from jumping in and ruining everything by making it all look just like the next city down the street.
I love books about local haunts and folklore! I can only imagine how great this book must be! When my daughter was in college, there was a lovely, quaint local bookstore near by that hosted several authors a week. I’ve been to a few signings there, really enjoyed them! ~Rhonda

Thanks for keeping us up to date on the literary happenings in our area. I think Harriet was a long time educator in our area? I remember her speaking to our faculty, but she didn’t share her storytelling expertise at that time. Please keep us posted on her plans for a storytelling festival. Another good fit for Fairhope!
Yes, Harriet taught in Baldwin County Schools for many years and then served at the district office as well. I’ll be sure to get the scoop if there’s a storytelling festival in sight!
I was lucky enough to see Harriet at the Foley Library last Thursday night telling about the ghosts here in Foley. She is an amazing storyteller. I hope she does put a storytelling festival together, she really does have a special gift.
She also told about the ghost in her house and when she mentioned the painted shades, I thought I’ve heard about this lady from Leslie Anne. You sure do know the most fascinating people. Thanks for sharing them with us –
