Happy Memorial Day

The Baldwin Pops will be presenting a patriotic Memorial Day concert tonight at Henry George Park in Fairhope.  If you are in our area, I hope you pack a picnic and join the celebration. If you live elsewhere in the United States, I hope your community is also observing the holiday in a meaningful way.
In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead, Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from falling hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
My seventh grade English teacher had me memorize this poem. What do your children know about Memorial Day? Click here to read more about “In Flander’s Fields.”

  • There was a wonderful service in the Marietta National Cemetery. At least one soldier from every war America has ever fought is buried there. It was beautiful, especially the presentation of the wreaths.

  • The concert sounds amazing. I go every year to see Sunset Symphony out on the Mississippi river and love it and the time with friends over a picnic and drinks.
