We Don’t Push in Fairhope

So, what’s this book about?

In We Don’t Push in Fairhope (launching October 8th), you’ll find stories about proper casserole dishes, fairies dancing in fields, dogs in costumes, a house built for a friend, praying for alligators, a pilgrim costume, and a school bus that walks. And hold on to your hat; did you know gravy comes in a jar? Oh dear mercy, yes!

But it also tells how Fairhope, Alabama, became so well known and how other communities can also find the secret to our success (hint- it isn’t the flowers).

And where did the title come from?

In 2015, there was an incident where an out-of-town woman misbehaved at a downtown event. She tried pushing and shoving and seemed to want to start a stampede. In a panic, I looked at her and, in my teacher-mom voice, said, “We don’t push in Fairhope.” It was like setting off dynamite in a vesper service. Some of you may have been around long enough to remember my blog post about this situation. The ruckus it caused was the vehicle for landing my column with the Al.com newspapers, and it was also how my readership numbers soared.

The story quickly spun out of control (social media and poor reading comprehension skills never seem to mix well). As you’ll read in the book, this incident caused me to search for signs of kindness. What I discovered was . . .

Connections! The pushy lady story is only a small part of the book. This is really a book about the creative and unique ways people in Fairhope connect and how it makes our city great.  For several years, Fairhope has been the fastest-growing city in the fastest-growing county in all of Alabama. Magazines can’t stop mentioning us, and journalists pretend they know all about Fairhope even though they’ve only stopped for lunch—if even that.

Even if you’ve never heard of Fairhope, you’ll like reading about the interesting characters and places that make it magical.

I’ve thrown my heart into this book because I love Baldwin County Alabama so much and I want everyone to feel the same about their corner of the world.  Stay tuned for pre-order information in the next week or so. I couldn’t have finished this project without the encouragement of my great readers!

Certainly hope my comment about wearing white after Labor Day won’t get me voted off the island.

Leslie Anne, I can’t wait to read your new book. I have been to Fairhope several times, but my last visit was a few years ago. I love a good story and you are a fabulous story-teller. Fairhope is beautiful and I found the people to be just as lovely.
