Oh, to be young and on spring break!
My son Harrison went on a big adventure for spring break with five other college friends. Actually, all of them knew at least one other person on the trip, but none of them knew everyone. They basically said, “Hey, who wants to drive cross-country, camp in national parks, then turn around and come home?” (my guy’s on the far left).
This is Harrison exploring the inside of a giant redwood tree. He took all the photos with either his drone, tripod or regular hand-held camera.
The photos are so majestic, I told him it’s like going on spring break with Ansel Adams or Steven Spielberg.
They played in the fog at the Golden Gate Bridge.
They camped at Zion National Park, Sequoia National Park, Yosemite National Park, and stayed with one of their Aunts in San Francisco. Harrison said, “Mom, you would have loved her. She’s just like you . . . crazy!” He meant it in the nicest way possible (I’m sure). She did sound pretty fun, and sent them on their way with lots of food. What a nice Aunt!
Here’s a picture of the drone, which is taking a picture of Harrison, taking a picture . . . got that? A special feature allows Harrison to walk around, and the drone follows him.
They ate at Fisherman’s Wharf and Harrison didn’t remember we’d taken him there when he was 18 months old. I think that’s pretty ungrateful of him.
And this is my favorite photo of the trip. They stopped at Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas on their way home, set up the tripod, and captured this amazing photo — with the shooting star.
I think all this camping, hiking and riding cross country with five other people would have done me in, yet when they returned to campus late Sunday night, they popped up and made it to class on Monday morning.
Youth. Sigh . . .

You are so right..to be young again. That was a great idea for a spring break and Harrison is so talented. He will have quite a portfolio if he wants to pursue photography. The pictures are amazing.
He loves adventure and travel, so he’s on his way soon! (If he can pass Spanish III. Everybody pray).
Speaking of Ansel Adams, I’m thinking that Harrison will someday be spoken of just as widely. All the shots are so good but that last one truly is brilliant!
I love seeing something like this. It reminds me that our young people may do a very good job of running this country someday. Maybe, probably.

I’ve got to start photographing with a drone! Seriously??? How brilliant and gorgeous he is!! The photo of “Mars” is breath taking!! What memories they will have!
He and his brother can operate it with ease. I guess it’s the video game generation, although we didn’t let them play many of those games. Since he’s had it, there are new restrictions he has to follow, but for photographers and filmmakers, they are wonderful.

Yeah, when you’re well behaved and trustworthy, your parents will agree to (almost) anything! And besides, with his red hair and fair skin, he’s never been one much for sitting around in the sun!

First and last picture are my favorites. What a great idea and that age sure is the time to do something off the cuff. Go for it! I bet they are planning next year to the East coast, or Canada maybe!!

Thank you Mo. Harrison gave me the file with probably over 100 photos to look over. There were others that were quite good, but I wanted to show a little bit of everything from their trip. But when I saw the Cadillac Ranch photo . . . winner, winner!
Sounds more amazing than any of the Spring Breaks I had in college. I’m so glad he’s living life large while he’s young and has the energy for it. Some of the tones on those photos look like they were shot in the late 70s/early 80s and make me think of my childhood back in those times. Thanks for sharing the photos. Thanks Hope. You have a good eye for color, which is no surprise since you’re an artist. Harrison is in a time where he likes to play with the colors. I’m not sure I like it, since I love turning the colors up full volume! ALL the crayons in the box!!! He’s good to experiment and try new things, so this too may pass.
