Yarn bombing in Fairhope!
Now that it’s official, I can let you in on a big surprise . . .
Fairhope is in the direct path of a yarn bomb!
In yet another clever effort to art-you-up-one-side-and-down-the-other, the Eastern Shore Art Center — ESAC, in conjunction with the Committee for Public Art — COPA, will sponsor “Art On A Limb” in beautiful downtown Fairhope. Opening September 10th and running through the 30th, the downtown will be yarn-tacular!
Teams formed from civic groups, businesses, churches, book clubs, neighborhoods, schools . . . just about anyone, will choose a tree along our downtown area to decorate with any sort of textile. The sponsorship for each tree is $200 which will fund the project and help provide more art opportunities for the Eastern Shore area.
The team’s name will be displayed on the tree, and the entire exhibit will remain on display for two weeks, giving everyone along the Gulf Coast a chance to come stroll the streets to admire the artwork!
Some textile installations stick to a theme or color scheme, but in true Fairhope fashion, this will be an, “anything goes” sort of thing.
As long as the decorations don’t harm the tree or offend the birds, creativity is the rule of the day.
This will serve as a small fundraiser for the ESAC, but will mainly be a showing of love for our city and its rich history of promoting the arts.
If you live in our area (Mobile and Pensacola too!), get your teams ready and your creative brains working. For those who like to be the audience, make plans to visit Fairhope during this time to see this fun installation.
Beep – beep! Get on the yarn bus!

There will be a non-manditory informational, “How To” meeting regarding this project on Saturday, May 7th at 3:00 at the ESAC. For more information, or to register your team, contact the ESAC at: 251-928-2228 or go to their web site HERE.
Leslie Anne, how unique (I think) is this idea! I do love your fair city…always a fun visit!
It will be fun, and I can see photos of the event in the Fairhope history books decades from now. It will make those who come after us scratch their heads for sure!
The stop sign and bus on my favorites. Marietta’s Museum of Art did this a couple of years ago. It’s a wonderful way to draw attention to knitting that’s often considered to be a “craft.”
I bet you’re already clicking away with those needles! Where’s Miss Marple when we need her?
Would you believe I don’t know how to knit or crochet? My grandmother taught me how to make a chain, and I could make it go a mile long, but I never learned how to put it all together! I’m thinking about using old sweaters or something like that . . . or maybe just stick to writing about it!
I would have loved to have seen Marietta’s exhibit. Any photos?
Buy other ladies crocheted blankets n cut ur width & hand sew end to end for a tree wrap or cut apart granny squares for ur own creative add ons to ur reputoire
The no-sew method. Love it.
Crazy Crazy! How fun is this! I can’t wait!
I’d think you would be crafty enough to enter a design. How about an Orange Beach theme?
What a wonderful idea! Everyone will love it.
I hope so! It’s certainly something different.
The scales? going up the tree! Love. How fun is this project. Wish I could knit!
You and me both! I think all the knitters will be busy over the next few months!
What a great idea to promote an actual talent and your town! I’d love to see it when it’s done (in September).

Well, I hope you do get to see it in person, but I’m sure I’ll have a photo or two or fifty here on the blog!
how awesome! i love the stop-sign-turned-flower! makes me wish i was that creative… 🙂
Will it still be there in October when I visit from Manchester UK ?
Oh, drats! No. It only runs for the two weeks in September. But don’t worry, October is one of the prettiest months here! We’ll have something special just for you! Make sure you let me know when you are here so I can meet my reader from the UK! (besides the Queen).
[…] right along . . . Art On A Limb is coming soon to Fairhope! The excitement is building and installations will go up this coming […]
Ready for the show! The flowers have been changed to fall colors and great backdrop weather
Bring on the S H O W
It’s going to be gorgeous. I caught the flower fairies downtown last night removing the last of the summer flowers. I can’t wait to see what they’ve done this morning!
Great idea to get the community working together.
One of your photos have been shared on FB, there are lover and not likers of this art form
It was a wonderful event! Glad you found the story.
