Frito Pie is now classy!

I’d like to take a moment and give my sincere thanks to Chef David Bancroft from the celebrated Auburn, Alabama restaurant, Acre, for properly serving Frito Pie in a bowl and thereby taking the stigma out of eating the . . . how do I say it, “uncouth” dish.

The first time I’d ever heard of Frito Pie was when my sons came home from church youth group and it was obvious they’d had some kind of religious experience, but upon further prodding, found they had just submitted to the power of eating out of a bag. “What do you mean they served dinner in a bag? Who were the parents on duty who would do such a thing? It was that new family from Pittsburgh, wasn’t it? Is the church budget so tight we can’t afford bowls? Were you having a lesson on homelessness?”

Eating Frito Pie straight out of the crinkly bag was soon the rage at every teenaged party. No amount of pizza or sub sandwiches could squelch their enthusiasm for the feast made by first “smooshing” the bag of chips, then pouring in drippy chili with all the toppings.

Southerners, and especially those of us from Alabama, have had enough trouble getting the rest of the world to understand that we (most of us) don’t eat . . . Click HERE to finish reading the story at AL.com.

This was a staple in the concession stands when I was in High School in Texas! I have to say that I haven’t seen one since but I’m sure that the teens love it!

Yes, I have to admit I’m a big Fritos fan. I guess it would be perfect for a football game, although I think I’d make a complete mess of it!

too hilarious Leslie Anne, on a lot of levels! I’ve noticed that fried pickles are all the rage now, and Birmingham has been named one of the top up and coming “foodie” cities…maybe Alabama will finally get a little respect!

Yee-ha! We’ll have the entire country eating Wickles Pickles before long!

Well I’ve had my good laugh for the day. I have never heard of this but then, I don’t have teens in the house. Leslie Anne, I’ll take salt over sweets any day! Well as disgusting as this sounds, I bet it’s good, a lot like taco salad. We will have to try this in the closet!

Yes, if you eat it when no one is looking, it doesn’t count. Enjoy!

Leslie Anne, I have never heard of eating from the bag, but then again, my son is 30! But I did have to chuckle! We, Southerners do have some odd food habits! My favorite Chef, Frank Stitt was just nominated 8 times consecutively as best restaurant in America! Birmingham has definitely made a mark in the culinary world! I can’t wait to try Acre!

It’s suddenly hip to be Southern and our food is all the rage. The next thing you know, Waffle House will be winning awards!
