Mother’s Day with a Southern Mama

I’ll be taking off a few days to spend some time with my two favorite children for Mother’s Day.
Here’s a replay of a previous post about things our Southern Mamas said  . . . or Mothers anywhere, for that matter (well, except for the grits thing!).
Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom (and also a Happy Decoration Day to my family) and all the other Mothers out there!
Southern Mamas have a way of saying what they mean — with a little twist.
I polled the gang at last month’s meeting of the
LAWDY Club (Lower Alabama Whine and Dine, Y’all) and here are the results
of advice their Mamas gave.
So here you go , Advice from a Southern Mama . . .
Or for the boys, “Don’t marry a girl who can’t cook grits.”
“Wear clean underwear in case you are in an accident.”
(I think that one may be bi-partisan across the Mason-Dixon Line)
“If you don’t want to hold it in your hand, don’t let it come out of your mouth.”
“The soap” can also be substituted with
“your Daddy” or “a switch.”
“Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes to the bone.”
“If you don’t stop that crying, I’ll give youÂ
something to cry about!”
or on a good day, how about this . .
“Darlin’, what kind of Coke do you want?”
“Not all women are ladies.”
and usually whispered in church when you are kicking the back of the pew . . .
“I’m goin’ to yank a knot in your tail!”
and good advice always,
“Stand completely still ’till he opens the door for you.”
and last but not least . . .

Happy Mother’s Day to you! I love this post! My Mother said (and still does) so many of these same things. Funny thing is, now I find myself saying some of them to my own child.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, I am my Mother after all . . .

Oh, my little mama told me most of these sayings too! One of her favorites was “Don’t do anything that you would be ashamed of if Jesus walked up”. That one probably kept me outta of lot of trouble! 🙂

That’s the truth! My Mother told me she wouldn’t go to the drive-in one Sunday night (back in the 50’s) because her Mother said the same thing!
If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all.

“Get your hair out of your eyes” – in the 70’s my sisters kept their hair long & straight and usually covering at least part of their faces. Even though styles had changed by the time I was in jr high & high school, I still got that same rant.
