I know it’s past Christmas, but I had to share these photos with you anyway . . .
Jingle bells meet Southern Belles.
The Christmas Knights and Knighties are one of the premier social clubs in Fairhope and since 1939 have delighted the town with their beautiful and festive Christmas dances.
This past December, the Knights and Knighties held one of their
best events ever at the Fairhope Civic Center.
Tradition states that years ago, a group of women would meet in the dark of night outside Fairhope’s Fort Riel National Guard Armory to decorate a Christmas tree for their children to see first thing in the morning. The nighttime decorating often involved the ladies traipsing down the street in their nightgowns or “nighties” for the holiday fun. Thus, the evolution of “Knighties” and their gallant “Knights” evolved into the fun group it is today.
Honorary members, who have served at least ten years in the club, now help at the front door by collecting invitations and helping with seating arrangements. I always think they look like the “Christmas Queens.”
Instead of the original nightgowns, the club members now wear adorable matching Santa dresses. The invited guests are always in black tie formalwear.
Oh, how I love a good black-tie event!
The annual Christmas Ball is the best party of the season, if not the entire year and is whispered by some to be, “Mardi Gras with manners.” You have to live through a Mardi Gras Ball to appreciate that comment.
The society is limited to thirty-five members who each decorate their own tables. Each member invites four other couples to join them at their table.
Seeing the table decorations is always one of my favorite parts of the evening. Other than the music, dancing, pretty dresses and amazing food, of course.
Speaking of the food, each member of Knights and Knighties is also responsible for providing several items for the buffet table. This is a unique feature of their party and keeps it from having a stiff “catered” look. The Southern – Belle -Santas all outdo themselves with delicious and creative dishes. These “Santa Hat” brownies with strawberries and whipped cream stole the show this year!
And this is only part of the incredible bounty of food my camera could catch! As people hovered around the table to fill a plate, the band kept everyone be-bopping along to the music. It was a combination food and dance line!
Each guest brings an unwrapped toy to be donated to Toys for Tots.
Not only are the Knights and Knighties the cutest hostesses in town, but they also pull out their talents by serenading their guests with a rousing version of, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”
Fairhope is a party-rich town, but the Knights and Knighties event takes
top spot on the fun scale every year!
